Tile grout (also called joint filler), is an essential material in any tiling project. It fills the gaps between tiles to prevent water seepage, dirt accumulation, and mould growth, while giving the tiled surface a cleaner, more attractive appearance. Choosing the right tile grout directly affects the durability of the tiling work and future maintenance requirements.

Choosing Grout Colours
Colour selection is a common consideration during grouting. Keep these principles in mind:
- Matching colours — Choose a colour close to the tile colour for a unified, harmonious look, suitable for most home renovations
- Contrasting colours — Choose a contrasting colour (e.g. dark grey grout with white tiles) to emphasise the tile layout lines
- Light colours — White and light grey are the most popular choices, versatile and easy to match. However, light colours show dirt more easily and require regular cleaning
- Dark colours — Dark grey, black, etc. are more dirt-resistant, suitable for floor tiles or high-traffic areas
Our Optimix TG410E and Mapei Ultracolor Plus both offer multiple colour options to suit your needs.
Grouting Application Tips
The quality of grout application directly affects the final result and durability. Key points to note:
- Ensure tile adhesive has cured — Wait at least 24 hours after tiling before grouting
- Clean the joints — Remove all dust and debris from joints before grouting
- Mix correctly — Add the correct amount of water as per product instructions and mix until uniform. Avoid making it too thin or thick
- Fill the joints — Use a rubber float to press grout diagonally into the joints, ensuring complete filling without air bubbles
- Clean the surface — After initial setting (approximately 15-30 minutes), wipe excess grout from tile surfaces with a damp sponge
- Curing — Avoid water exposure or foot traffic after application. Normal use can resume after 24 hours
Is Tile Grout Waterproof?
Quality cement-based tile grouts (such as Optimix TG410E and Mapei Ultracolor Plus) offer good waterproofing performance, effectively preventing water penetration. They are suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas with regular water contact. Some products meet the BS EN 13888 CG2 WA highest water resistance standard.
For environments with exceptionally high waterproofing requirements (such as swimming pools, water tanks, or areas with prolonged water immersion), we recommend epoxy grout such as our Weber Weberepox Easy or Mapei Kerapoxy, which provide superior waterproof protection.
What Is the Difference Between Tile Grout and Joint Sealant?
Tile grout (Tile Grout) and joint sealant (Joint Sealant) are often confused, but they serve different purposes:
- Tile grout — A cement-based or epoxy resin powder material mixed with water to fill tile joints. It sets hard and rigid, suitable for fixed-width tile gaps
- Joint sealant — A silicone or polyurethane-based paste used for expansion joints, corner joints, and junctions between different materials that require flexibility. It remains elastic after curing, accommodating minor structural movement
Simply put: use tile grout between tiles, and joint sealant where tiles meet walls or floors. Both should be used together for complete waterproofing. For joint sealant products, see our expansion joint sealant range.
Is There a Difference Between Floor Grout and Wall Grout?
Generally, the same tile grout can be used for both floor and wall tiles. However, pay attention to joint width compatibility:
- Narrow joints (1-6mm) — Use fine or extra-fine grout, such as Weber Webergrout Fine
- Standard joints (3-15mm) — Use standard grout, such as Optimix TG410E or Mapei Ultracolor Plus
- Wide joints (10mm+) — Use coarse-grade grout
Floor tiles endure more foot traffic and water contact. We recommend choosing products with higher waterproofing and abrasion resistance.
