Floor Screed

Overview:

Floor screed is a bagged, pre-blended cement-based floor-levelling material — just add water and trowel it flat to level and prepare concrete floors. Compared with site-mixed sand-cement it is more consistent; compared with self-levelling it suits medium-to-thick levelling and correcting larger level differences. Wah Hing carries Optimix and Weber brands, with some grades offering integral waterproofing or thermal insulation. Most grades typically in stock.

What is floor screed?

Floor screed is a factory pre-blended, cement-based floor mortar — just add water, then trowel it flat to level a concrete floor and give a solid, even base for tiles, flooring and other finishes. Compared with site-mixed sand-cement it is more consistent and faster-drying; compared with the self-levelling range, screed is hand-troweled and better suited to medium-to-thick levelling and correcting larger differences.

How to choose a floor screed

  • Standard vs waterproof vs insulating — use a standard grade for general levelling; choose a waterproof grade (with integral hydrophobic additives) for wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens and rooftops; choose an insulating grade for rooftops and slabs needing thermal insulation.
  • Screed vs self-levelling — use screed to build up thicker layers and larger drops; use self-levelling for thin smoothing and a fine base before SPC/vinyl. The two combine: build up with screed, then finish with self-levelling. See our complete self-levelling guide.
  • Thickness & level difference — apply large drops in layers; follow each product's Technical Data Sheet (TDS) for recommended thickness.
