Application Method
- Substrate Preparation — Concrete must be thoroughly cleaned, free from dust, loose material, surface contamination, and materials that reduce bond. Steel reinforcement must be prepared by abrasive blasting or high-pressure water to Sa 2 (ISO 8501-1). Refer to EN 1504-10 for specific requirements
- Mixing — Add 3.6 litres of clean water per 25 kg bag. Pour water into container first, gradually add powder while stirring, and mix with a low speed drill (< 500 rpm) for at least 3 minutes until uniform consistency
- Application — Thoroughly pre-wet the substrate (recommended 2 hours prior), keeping the surface wet with no standing water. For manual application, first make a scratch coat by firmly pressing a thin layer into the substrate surface, then build up to desired thickness. Finish with a wooden or plastic float or damp sponge
- Curing — Protect fresh mortar immediately from premature drying using appropriate curing methods such as curing compound, moist geotextile membrane, or polythene sheet
Important Notes
- Avoid application in direct sun and/or strong wind conditions
- Do not exceed the recommended water dosage
- Apply only to sound, prepared substrates
- Do not add additional water during surface finishing — this causes discolouration and cracking
- Protect freshly applied material from freezing
- Pot life is temperature dependent: 5°C ~60 min, 20°C ~30–40 min, 30°C ~15–20 min
- Clean all tools and equipment with water immediately after use; hardened material can only be removed mechanically
FAQ
What is the maximum application thickness of MonoTop 612?
According to the technical data sheet, Sika MonoTop 612 can be applied in layers from a minimum of 5 mm to a maximum of 30 mm, suitable for vertical and overhead surfaces. For greater thicknesses, apply in multiple layers.
Does MonoTop 612 require a bonding primer?
For manual application on a well-prepared and roughened substrate, a bonding primer is generally not required. If specified, Sikalatex mixed with Portland cement can be used as a bonding primer. For steel reinforcement corrosion protection, SikaTop Armatec 110 EpoCem can be applied.
What is the difference between MonoTop 612 and MonoTop 615HB?
MonoTop 612 is an R3 class repair mortar with a maximum single layer thickness of 30 mm, suitable for general structural repair. MonoTop 615HB is a thick-build repair mortar allowing greater single-layer application thickness, suitable for projects requiring thicker repair layers. Both are fiber reinforced structural repair mortars — the choice depends on required application thickness and project specifications.
How to calculate MonoTop 612 consumption?
Consumption is approximately 18 kg per m² per cm of thickness. For example, a 2 cm thick repair requires approximately 36 kg/m² (about 1.5 bags). Each 25 kg bag mixed with 3.6 litres of water yields approximately 16 litres of mortar. Actual consumption varies with substrate roughness and application thickness.
