Quick Summary (TL;DR)
EN 12004 classifies tile adhesives into three main types: C Class (cement-based, most common), D Class (dispersion ready-to-use paste), and R Class (reaction resin, strongest). C Class is further divided into C1 (standard grade, ordinary ceramic tiles) and C2 (high-performance grade, porcelain/large-format tiles). Additional marks include: T reduced slip, E extended open time, F fast setting, S1 deformable, S2 highly deformable. Understanding this coding system tells you which adhesive suits your project. Wah Hing supplies over 20 tile adhesives from C1T to R2 covering all grades, with most items in stock. Some models are available for ordering on enquiry.
⚠️ Important: This article is for general reference only. Floor tiling has more room for error, but wall tiling (especially external walls) involves safety risks -- falling tiles can cause personal injury. For wall and external wall works, always follow the product Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and project specifications strictly. Do not rely solely on this article for construction guidance. If in doubt, WhatsApp Wah Hing or consult a professional engineer.
How to Read the EN 12004 Classification System?
Many installers see "C2TE S1" on the packaging and get confused. But the EN 12004 coding system is actually very logical -- break it down and it all makes sense:
Three-Step Reading Method:
- First letter = Chemical base of the adhesive (C / D / R)
- Following number = Performance level (1 = standard / 2 = high-performance)
- Trailing letters = Additional special features (T, E, F, S1, S2)
Once you understand this system, choosing tile adhesive is no longer guesswork. Here is a detailed explanation of each category.

C Class: Cement-Based Tile Adhesive (Most Common)
C Class stands for Cementitious Tile Adhesive -- using cement as the primary binder, mixed with quartz sand and polymer modifiers to form a dry powder product. Over 90% of tile adhesives on the Hong Kong market are C Class, making them the most common choice for construction and renovation.
C1 -- Standard Grade
C1 is the entry level with standard bond strength. Lower polymer content, relying mainly on cement and sand mechanical interlocking to bond tiles.
Suitable for:
- Ceramic tiles with water absorption > 3% (Ceramic Tile)
- General indoor floor and wall tiles
- Small tiles (300x600mm and below)
- Budget-conscious large-area tiling projects
Not suitable for:
- Porcelain tiles (water absorption < 0.5%)
- Large-format tiles
- Outdoor environments

C2 -- Improved Grade
C2 is the advanced level with approximately double the bond strength of C1. Contains significantly more polymer modifiers (Polymer Modified), providing both mechanical interlocking and chemical bonding to grip smooth, virtually non-absorbent porcelain tiles.
Suitable for:
- Porcelain tiles (Porcelain, water absorption < 0.5%)
- Large-format tiles (600x1200mm and above)
- Outdoor tiling
- Heavy wall tiles
- Outdoor tiling, heavy wall tiles
C2 has multiple sub-combinations based on additional marks. Below are grouped by mark.
#### C2TE -- Improved + Anti-Slip + Extended Open Time
This is the most mainstream C2 combination, suitable for most indoor porcelain tile projects.

| Mapei Keraflex | C2TE | Mapei classic, global best-seller |
| Mapei Adesilex P9 | C2TE | Anti-slip + extended open time, great for high-level work |
#### C2TE S1 -- Improved + Flexible (Top Everyday Choice)
S1 means deformable -- can withstand minor substrate deformation. This combination is the standard for large-format tiles, thin porcelain tiles, outdoor tiling, and underfloor heating systems. If you're unsure which grade to use, C2TE S1 won't go wrong.
| Product | Grade | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Weber Weberset 383 | C2TE S1 | Weber premium flexible, first choice for large-format tiles |
| Weber TF Eco Plus | C2TE S1 | Cement-free formula, anti-efflorescence, ideal for white stone |
| Optimix TA328 | C2TE S1 | Optimix flexible, great value |
| Optimix TA328S | C2TE S1 | Anti-efflorescence formula, first choice for light-coloured tiles/stone |
| Mapei Keraflex Maxi S1 | C2TE S1 | Low-dust technology + thick-bed capable |
| Ronabond Super Tile | C2TE S1 | Designed for large-format tiles and stone |
#### C2FT / C2FTE -- Fast Setting Type
F stands for Fast Setting. Regular tile adhesive requires 24 hours before foot traffic; fast-setting types are ready in 3-4 hours. Ideal for tight schedules or renovation projects where you don't want to block access for too long.
| Product | Grade | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Optimix SA329 | C2FT | Fast-setting stone adhesive |
| Ronabond Rapid Set | C2FT | Two-component fast setting, walkable in 2-3 hours |
| Weber Fast Fix | C2FTE S1 | Fast setting + extended open time + flexible (best of both worlds) |
| Mapei Granirapid | C2F S1 | Fast setting + flexible S1, speed and quality combined |
Note: Fast-setting types have a short working window. Once mixed, they must be used quickly. Demands faster hands from the installer. If you're not experienced, try a small area first to get the rhythm.
#### C2 (Other)
| Product | Grade | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Weber Weberset Mosaic | C2 + CG2 | Adhesive + grout 2-in-1, designed for mosaics |

D Class: Dispersion Ready-to-Use Paste
D Class stands for Dispersion Tile Adhesive -- a ready-to-use paste tile adhesive that requires no water mixing. Made primarily from synthetic resin emulsion (typically EVA or Acrylic), it cures through moisture evaporation.
D1TE -- Ready-to-Use Type
| Product | Grade | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Mapei Mapemastic Easy | D1TE | Open and use, anti-slip, extended open time |
D Class advantages:
- Open and use, zero mixing, ideal for DIY
- No dust, clean application
- Excellent anti-slip properties, wall tiles don't slide easily
- Can be sealed and used in multiple sessions, no waste
D Class limitations:
- Lower bond strength than C Class
- Not suitable for outdoor (cures by moisture evaporation, too slow in humid outdoor environments)
- Not suitable for submerged environments (bathtubs, pools)
- Not suitable for large-format tiles (insufficient bond strength)
- Not suitable for floor tiles (higher drying shrinkage rate)
- Only suitable for small-area indoor wall applications
Suitable for: Home DIY replacing a few kitchen wall tiles, bathroom wall touch-ups, mosaic wall features. In short, D Class is the "convenience" tile adhesive -- sacrificing strength for ease of use.
R Class: Reaction Resin (Strongest Grade)
R Class stands for Reaction Resin Tile Adhesive, typically epoxy resin (Epoxy) or polyurethane (PU) two-component products. It does not cure through hydration or drying, but through the chemical reaction when components A and B are mixed.
R2 -- Reaction Type (Highest Grade)
R2 bond strength is double that of C2, and four times C1. People often ask "is there anything stronger than C2?" -- R Class is the answer.
| Product | Grade | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Mapei Adesilex PG2 | R2 | Epoxy resin, structural-grade bond, chemical resistant |
| Ronabond EPA 711 | R2 | Epoxy resin, water-washable, user-friendly application |
R Class advantages:
- Highest bond strength, approaching structural adhesive level
- Fully waterproof, chemical resistant (acid, alkali, solvent)
- Very low shrinkage, dimensionally stable
- Can bond metal, glass, stone, and other non-traditional substrates
R Class limitations:
- Expensive (per kg, 5-10x the cost of C Class)
- Two-component mixing requires precise ratios
- Short working time (typically 30-45 minutes)
- Requires professional application experience
Suitable for:
- Industrial facilities (chemical splash environments)
- Food processing plants (hygiene standard compliance)
- Swimming pool beds (long-term submersion + chlorine)
- Tiling onto metal/steel surfaces
- Structural repair combined with tiling
Key point: If your project environment is not particularly harsh, C2TE S1 is more than sufficient -- no need to upgrade to R Class. R Class is the "nuclear option", using it for ordinary renovation is overkill.
Additional Marks Explained in Detail
EN 12004 letter marks represent special features of tile adhesive, and can be combined with any C/D/R type.
T -- Reduced Slip (Thixotropic / Non-slip)
When tiling walls, tiles tend to slip down due to their own weight. T-grade adhesive contains thixotropic additives that increase viscosity when at rest, so that once a tile is placed, it won't slip more than 0.5mm.
When you need T: Wall tiling, ceiling tiling, heavy tiles on walls.
E -- Extended Open Time
Open time is how long the adhesive remains effective for tile placement after being applied to the substrate. Adhesive with E marking has longer open time, giving installers more time for adjustments.
When you need E: Large-area tiling (installers need more adjustment time), complex pattern installations, high-level external wall work.
F -- Fast Setting
F-grade adhesive cures much faster than standard products. Ideal for locations that need to be restored to use quickly, such as shopping mall renovations, corridor repairs.
When you need F: Tight schedules, commercial premises renovation (minimise closure time), same-day completion requirements.
S1 -- Deformable (Flexible Type)
S1-grade adhesive can withstand minor substrate deformation without cracking. This flexibility absorbs thermal expansion/contraction and minor structural movement, preventing tile cracking or detachment.
When you need S1:
- Large-format / thin porcelain tiles (large area, edge stress concentration)
- Outdoor tiling (sun, rain, large temperature swings)
- Underfloor heating systems
- Tiling over wooden substrates
- External walls and other demanding environments
S2 -- Highly Deformable (High Flexibility Type)
S2 is the highest flexibility grade, suitable for extreme environments.
When you need S2: Swimming pools (water pressure + chemicals + temperature variation), industrial floors (heavy machinery vibration), bridge decks/rooftops (large thermal expansion/contraction).
Note: The highest grade currently available at Wah Hing is S1. If you need S2 grade, please WhatsApp Wah Hing for ordering enquiries.

FAQ
Is there a C3 grade tile adhesive?
No. The EN 12004 standard only defines up to C2. If you need bond strength beyond C2, consider R Class (reaction resin), such as Adesilex PG2 (R2 grade).
Can C1 and C2 be mixed together?
Not recommended. The two have different formulations. When mixed, performance becomes unpredictable -- bond strength may actually be lower than pure C1. Choose one appropriate grade for your project.
Can tile adhesive replace cement-sand mix?
Yes, and for porcelain and large-format tiles, tile adhesive is mandatory. However, for high water absorption ceramic floor tiles (like red floor tiles), cement-sand mix works just as well and is more cost-effective. See our Tile Adhesive vs Cement-Sand Mix comparison article for details.
Can expired tile adhesive still be used?
Cement-based tile adhesive (C Class) typically has a 12-month shelf life. After expiry, the cement component absorbs moisture and clumps, with bond strength dropping significantly. Strongly recommend against using expired product -- saving a few hundred dollars on materials is not worth the risk of tile detachment.
Why do some tiles fall off after just six months?
The most common cause is wrong grade selection: using C1 for low absorption porcelain tiles. Second is hollow spots: not doing back-buttering on large tiles, leaving air pockets underneath that crack under pressure. Third is poor substrate preparation: oil, dust, and loose layers all compromise bonding.
What is anti-efflorescence tile adhesive for?
Efflorescence is white crystalline salt deposits that seep through tile joints or tile surfaces, affecting appearance. It is particularly noticeable on light-coloured tiles and white stone. Weber TF Eco Plus and Optimix TA328S both feature anti-efflorescence formulas that significantly reduce this problem.
Is fast-setting tile adhesive suitable for beginners?
Not really recommended. Fast-setting products have a short working window (typically 30-60 minutes before setting begins) -- the installer needs to work quickly, and mistakes are easy for the inexperienced. Beginners should use products with E marking (extended open time) for more adjustment time.
Which is the most convenient tile adhesive for DIY?
Mapei Mapemastic Easy (D1TE) is the best DIY choice -- open and use, no mixing required, no dust. However, it is only suitable for small-area indoor wall applications. Floor tiles and large-area work still require C Class tile adhesive.
